To meet the demands of the District’s ever-increasing enrollment and to create a learning environment that is consistent with the District’s 21st century education model, renovations and additions to make Northside Elementary School into a 4 deep configuration (4 classrooms per grade), were necessary. As a Grades 1 through 3 building, Northside Elementary School educates the District’s younger students residing in the surrounding neighborhoods so creating a fun and vibrant environment was important. To break the building’s overall capacity down into smaller groups of students, the classroom wings are organized by grade group. A total of 12 general education classrooms are provided. Each grade group includes an open collaborative learning environment along with small group instructional spaces.
As part of the newly improved Northside Elementary School, the building’s main entrance was enlarged, and this new two-story space opens onto a large, open lobby anchored by a new media center. The new media center is located in the pre-renovation multipurpose room space. A new multipurpose room was constructed as an addition to the building with large windows that face out across a wide lawn toward Walnut Street. A new rear entrance anchors the far end of the new multipurpose room lobby and serves both as access to the school’s outdoor play spaces and as an after-hours entrance.
