The first new Cabela’s store to be constructed on the East Coast was targeted for the Mid-Atlantic Region. Led by the vision of Doug Rohrbaugh, Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates (CRA Architects) partnered with Cabela’s to identify Pennsylvania as the site for their 7th Legacy store due to Pennsylvania’s immense hunting and fishing heritage, and its support of all outdoor activities. After developing a short list of sites, Hamburg, PA, along the busy I-78 corridor, was selected as the site for this destination retail store, targeting potential customers from Philadelphia, New York City, Harrisburg and from all over the northeast.
Each “Cabela’s Experience” is different. Cabela’s loyal customer base, as they travel around the country, will visit a store they haven’t been to just to experience and enjoy that stores unique “Wow Factor”. Visitors will spend hours in a Cabela’s not only shopping, but also viewing features like “Conservation Mountain”, a 30 to 40 foot high mountain display centrally located within the store, and showcasing world-class taxidermy from around North America, or enjoying the African Diorama that features Africa’s most dangerous five game species. Most Legacy stores also include a large walk-through aquarium, in some cases as large as 55,000 gallons. As the Architect for the last 22 of Cabela’s 29 Legacy stores, CRA Architects enjoyed the unique design opportunity of working with this world class retailer, and the challenge of making each store a different experience for Cabela’s customers. One mainstay of each legacy store is Cabela’s famed Gun Library, full of an array of high end and antique firearms, which are not only on display in finely crafted custom cabinetry, but each is also for sale. The Cabela’s legacy stores are designed around a timber framed, sky-lit central bay constructed of all natural materials such as wood, genuine logs and real stone.
CRA Architects’ long-term relationship with Cabela’s began in 2002 with their Hamburg, PA legacy store, the flagship and largest of their fleet at more than 265,000 SF. CRA Architects’ exclusive relationship with Cabela’s allowed for the design of the remainder of their legacy stores including the following:
