In a momentous event that brought together the Superintendent of Schools, Calvert County Council, the School Board, State Representatives, Calvert Capital Projects and the design and construction team, PTA members, and the local community, Calvert County officially broke ground on the replacement of Northern Middle School. The new facility promises to redefine education in the region and provide a cutting-edge environment for students, educators, and the broader community.
“This is a day we’ve all been waiting for—a milestone that symbolizes hope and progress for generations to come,” stated Superintendent Dr. Andraé Townsel. “The new Northern Middle School will be a beacon of innovation, blending state-of-the-art technology with flexible learning spaces, collaborative hubs, maker spaces, and areas for community use. Calvert Shines! Calvert Shines! Calvert Shines!”
Lisa Vaughn, Capital Projects Manager for the Interagency Committee on School Construction, shared her excitement: “Countless hours of hard work and dedication have gone into making this dream a reality. This school is more than a building—it’s an investment in our students and in the future of this community.”
The new 109,237 square-foot facility will be constructed just north of the existing school, accommodating up to 796 students across three stories. Upon completion, the current building will be demolished to make way for expanded parking and updated vehicle drop-off areas. Designed as an environmentally conscious structure, the school will adhere to Green Globes principles, marking it as the district’s third green-certified building.
The facility was designed by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates—Architects, and will be constructed by Keller Construction Managers and is expected to be completed in time for the 2026-27 academic year, with final site improvements concluding in spring 2027.
