Harrisburg Area Community College – Senator Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Training Complex

Harrisburg, PA

Following the successful completion of the Senator John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center Master Plan, Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates was selected to continue through to the first phase of architectural work.

As part of phase 1, the construction of the new 50,000-sf Senator Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Training Complex (LET) Building relocated the HACC Law Enforcement Program from the current North Hall Facility. The facility contains a 15 lane 150’ long pistol range and a 10 lane 300’ long rifle range; and includes classrooms, department offices, support space and storage for the 2 ranges. The design incorporates a masonry shell that contains sound and spent rounds from the range.

Sustainable Design (LEED) has been incorporated in the building using durable materials that contain a high recycled content and are locally manufactured reducing cost and distance to the site. The classroom component is south facing to maximize daylighting. The dense core of the design along with thermally efficient exterior façade and roof is paired with a high efficiency mechanical system to reduce energy consumption.

Phase One of the Master Plan also includes:

  • Repairs and expansion of the Fire Training Grounds.
  • Repairs to the existing North Hall which allows Fire, EMS, Transportation and Healthcare to grow within the existing facility.
  • Construction of a Campus Green that allows for outdoor physical fitness training and a sense of identity for the Facility.
  • Separation of incoming traffic and traffic for the Fire Training Grounds are divided into two entrances to ensure safety.
  • Relocation and Expansion of Parking Facilities.
  • Enhancement of the Existing Capital Area Greenbelt that currently runs through the Facility.
