Serving one of the fastest growing areas in Pennsylvania, Cumberland Valley School District is experiencing enrollment increases of approximately 200 elementary age students per year. The District contracted with Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates to provide a master plan to accommodate the student growth and maintain the District’s buildings. The new Mountain View Middle School, designed with a capacity of 1,400 students for 6th-8th grade, is part of a new two-building campus for the District. The new Winding Creek Elementary School opened in the Fall of 2018.
Inside and outside the classroom, and on the new campus as a whole, the design focused on enabling educators to prepare students for the future. The new middle school incorporates agile and flexible community spaces, reinforces outdoor connections, creates diverse and customizable teaching and learning styles, interdisciplinary and collaborative areas that merge science with the arts, and spaces that establish relationships and interaction among teachers and learners. The school provides program space to include an auditorium, two full-court gymnasiums, media center, music department, cultural arts classrooms, cafeteria, food court and kitchen. Outdoor athletic facilities include a new 6 lane track and synthetic turf field with seating and outdoor lighting. The facility is designed with flexible and adaptable educational environments which meet the individualized needs of all learners while accommodating small and large group instructional activities. The school is organized along “Main Street” to separate educational wings from the larger program spaces with the ability to secure the classrooms during evening events. Each wing accommodates a grade level and contains classrooms, support spaces and access to outdoor learning courtyards.
