Jefferson County Courthouse

Brookville, PA

Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates worked with the County Commissioners to maintain the original historic character of the Jefferson County Courthouse. The Commissioners were concerned with restoring the heritage of Jefferson County while modernizing the courthouse to today’s standards. Prior to the architectural design, a space planning, programming and assessment study was completed. Based upon the results of the study, Jefferson County moved forward with the architectural design phase.

Our project team concealed new mechanical systems and improved the thermal envelope by replacing the roof and windows and installing new insulation. The renovations to the interior of the courthouse included reconfiguring office space throughout the facility and public space upgrades, including restoring marble-lined corridors and entrances. Exterior renovations included substantial masonry, stone and wood detailing, and extensive bell tower repairs.

Sustainability goals were considered throughout the project. The final mechanical system included a hydronic high efficiency radiant heat system that used flexible pipework to avoid damage to coffered ceilings and floor structure. Low flow fixtures were used to reduce water consumption.

At the end of the project, the County and commissioners’ two goals were met. First, was to restore a symbol of pride for the community to its original grandeur. Second, was to modernize the facility so that it can be a living, breathing facility serving the people of Jefferson County for years into the future.
