New Manheim Township Middle School Construction Bids Under Budget
Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates, Architects, is pleased to announce the opening of the construction bids for the new Manheim Township Middle School on November 20, 2018.
The base bid results were $2 million dollars less than the projected project budget of $53,410,219. This allowed the District to select various alternates to improve long-term facility maintenance and still remain under budget.
The cost per square foot for the project is $182 excluding site work. This cost represents a significant value to the School District. The number is $32 SF less than the average cost per square foot published by the PA Department of Education Report 30 for recent years at $214 SF.
“We are pleased that the bids for our middle school construction project came in $1.9 million dollars less than what we anticipated during our Act 34 Hearing. This will provide us the opportunity to continue to review the project to ensure that we build the best possible learning environment for the community of Manheim Township,” stated MTSD District Officials.
The new 245,000 square foot school has program space for 1,200 students and will provide innovative learning environments and flexibility for future programs. The design of the school provides for multiple academic wings which are connected by a Main Commons/Cafeteria. This Main Commons serves as a separation between the social and gathering spaces and the academic spaces. A separation is beneficial for safety and security, community use, noise control and wayfinding. The two academic wings hold 7th and 8th grades and have eight Team Clusters. Each Team Cluster includes classrooms, science labs and breakout spaces for collaboration. The school design also includes a 600 capacity black box theatre and a 600 capacity gymnasium, each able to hold one grade level.
The new school will be constructed on the site of the existing middle school which will be demolished after construction is completed. Construction on the new middle school will begin in April 2019 and is scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates has been working with the District on the project since May of 2017, Manheim Township School District has been a client since 2006.
