Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates Participates in 2016 ACE Mentor Program
Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates is proud to be a part of the ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program. Rachel Gresham, Elaine Fogliani, and Ron Hotinger served as mentors for the program while Dennis Cross, AIA, Director of Architecture in CRA’s Charlottesville office, served as the Coordinator for the 2015-16 ACE Program in central Virginia.
This year we worked with eleven students from Albemarle High School in Albemarle County Virginia on the design of a Collaboration Space, for their school. Laura Massey, Career Specialist at Albemarle HS, served as the student liaison for the program. There were a total of 11 work sessions held weekly after school for two hours where the students interacted with the many mentors to learn the makeup of a project team and how the multiple disciplines interfaced during a project and the roles they played. After the students separated into two teams, these same mentors then served as advisors as the students developed their designs. The students also learned about sustainability along with presentation techniques and methods.
In February the two student teams had the opportunity to present their projects to school staff, parents, and the mentors and to celebrate this event with a scholarship check awarded to senior Emmet Haden, provided by the AIA Central Virginia.
It is extremely rewarding to participate in the ACE program and we are consistently amazed at how much the students learn, and how sophisticated their solutions and projects are after spending only twenty two hours with them. We are already looking forward to next year and how we can reach even more students!
