From 1980 until 1991, the building was not maintained and due to roof failure and a major portion of the structure was severely water damaged.

The project included complete replacement of the second floor framing, roof structure, and all mechanical and electrical systems. The addition to the building was designed to accommodate fire apparatus. An elevator and new enclosed stairs were added to meet current code requirements. Trails and Trees Environmental Center – Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates teamed with local contractors in the Mechanicsburg School District to design and build an outdoor environmental classroom facility within an existing nature center. The complex features a teaching pavilion, a geological interpretive center, an archeological dig simulation, walking trails that tie into existing nature trails and storage facilities. Building materials including Western Red Cedar, cultured stone and slate were selected for their durability.

Trails and Trees Environmental Center – Phase II – Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates is currently working with the Mechanicsburg Wildcat Foundation and Mechanicsburg Area School District on the design for the Trails and Trees Environmental Center Phase II. Envisioned as a building that teaches students about sustainable design practices, the current design includes recreation offices for the school district and two enclosed multi-purpose science classrooms.
Oriented on the site to compliment the existing teaching pavilion, the building takes advantage of natural daylighting and views to reduce the energy consumption for lighting. This generated the building’s unique “butterfly” roof form that maximizes daylighting along the north and south facades, but at the same time will allow rainwater runoff from the roof to be captured in cisterns for reuse as “grey” water in the building and reduce water consumption.
The south façade of the building incorporates roll up glass garage doors for daylighting that can be opened to allow students to work more directly with the nature center. These doors along with operable clerestory windows allows for natural ventilation within the building. The south façade incorporates a porch and sunshading to control glare from daylight within the building. Materials selection both interior and exterior are based upon life cycle cost, recycled content, durability, maintenance, low V.O.C. content and local production to reduce transportation costs and environmental impact. Ground source heat pump is being investigated as a heating and air conditioning system along with solar power. These systems in concert with increased thermal insulation and high efficiency windows will reduce the energy consumption of the building.
